Can I clean the spark plugs?

Some people are wondering if it is possible to clean spark plugs. Technically, yes, you can clean spark plugs, however, in most cases, it is not worth it. We do not recommend it for several reasons:

Ultimately, you won't get the same performance from a clean spark plug as you do from a new one. Electricity discharges better from sharp edges. A used spark plug will have frayed edges, and cleaning can contribute to this wear.

If you insist on trying to clean it anyway, here are the cleaning procedures provided by a longtime car enthusiast:

  • Wipe the spark plug and spark plug tip with a clean cloth.
  • Spray the spark plug end with a quick-drying cleaner such as fuel injection cleaner or brake cleaner. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
  • Use a wire brush to clean away any loosened deposits.
  • Blow out the spark plug and spark plug with compressed air or a can of compressed air.
  • Reset the gap according to your vehicle's specifications.
  • If the spark plug has a flat seat, remember to use a new gasket, or adjust the tightening torque accordingly.

Note: Insufficient spark plug cleaning may cause spark plug failure in a very short period of time. Clean the spark plug thoroughly to avoid problems later.

Remember, if a spark plug is getting dirty, it is usually due to engine side factors or incorrect heat range selection. If the spark plug shows unusual signs of wear or does not come out clean after cleaning, it is time to replace it.
